I started doing agility to give my own dogs
some fun. Pepper, my Springer cross breed, goes through
the tunnel like a rat up a drain pipe. Cassie, the Lurcher loves
the jumps and the weave poles. Other owners, who come to the
classes, noticed the equipment and asked if their dogs could
have a go, which led me to offer this as a fun class.
I do not profess to be an expert, I am
learning all the time and I use my own dogs as guinea pigs for
testing new equipment. We do not compete with other clubs, its
not at competition level or standards, it’s purely for fun.
Dogs have a natural instinct to want fun and exercise. The
agility course is a just an extension of this fun instinct
and the dogs ability to leap, jump, balance and curiosity for
tunnels. In addition there are the benefits of increased
dog control through verbal or hand signals, a high level of
trust between you and your dog, socialising with other dogs and
every one gets fitter!!
I put the safety of your dog first. Most
breeds reach maturity between twelve and eighteen months old.
Please be aware that it is possible that jumping may damage growing
bones and put stress on ligaments in the legs and the hips. It
is for this reason that dogs under the age of one and the Giant
breeds will not be permitted to go over the jumps,
however there is no reason why any dog cannot be encouraged to
walk over poles, go through the tunnel and weave. All are
welcome to have a go; Max the Great Dane might have a problem in
the tunnel though!!!! Jumps are adjustable so again size doesn't
matter! If you are unsure whether your dog is suitable
please contact me.
There needs to be a good standard of basic
control for agility. Unruly dogs will not be accepted. Its great
fun and the dogs and owners love it. Enthusiasm and motivation
is really all that’s needed. It can become quite
competitive!!!!!!
